Brief Introduction
 Beta 2.5 |
The high-end home cinema VPL VW50 (Pearl) SXRD projector from Sony has 900 Ansi lumens, a contrast of 15000:1 and an HDTV 1920 x 1080 resolution. The built-in lens shift function provides freedom when setting up. The projector can illuminate a picture width of up to 305 cm thanks to its 900 Ansi lumens. In room lighting, however, the picture width should ideally be less than 203 cm. It is also Full HD 1080P compatible. At just 22 decibels, the device is one of the quieter projectors. This model is no longer offered by Sony, but is still very popular in our projector database.

Sony VPL VW50 (Pearl) Ratings

TOP projector with limitations |
|
Actually a TOP projector, but unfortunately it has quite some limitations:
- Size (the part is big and bulky)
- Setup is problematic because so big
- Wear of the SRXD panels after 1000-1500h
** yes, for me the contrast and brightness also became less (measurable) and it was not the lamp!!!!
The durability of the panels was a problem for me, as Sony also saw no need to replace the panels, although measured by dealers with devices and 3 lamps. I was able to sell it on eBay at a hammer price. Phew... Sony still needs to work on the durability of the Crystalpanels. Too bad.

Langzeiterfahrungen? Rumors: SXRD has a negative effect on efficiency stability |
|
Have only been able to marvel at its big brother, the 60... Image quality was phenomenal, but has anyone had any long-term experience with this SXRD technology? A member of staff at pipro.de, for example, claimed that they had just run a VPL-VW50 through 800 hours of lamp life and had already noticed extreme light intensity and loss of contrast. (However, he said it wasn‘t the lamp, you had already tried it with a new one). (Incidentally, it was a DLP fan I had on the phone)
But I‘ve also read similar things in other forums...
Similar to LCOS technology, the liquid crystal supposedly causes extreme light loss after prolonged use
Can anyone here confirm this? I think this is a rumor, which would also mean extreme losses for Sony, somehow I can‘t imagine!
Thanks for your answers! Greetings and praise to this wonderful and very helpful projector comparison site!

Super Review... |
|
@michi: Whether you wrote that or bang...
About the VW50: The device is a very decent FullHD projector, but it has some serious competition.
+ Good light (the HC6000 stinks in comparison)
+ Acceptable fan noise
+ Barely perceptible pixel structure
+ Good contrast, good black level
+ 24p compatible
- Large dimensions, high weight
- Less installation flexibility (projector needs some distance to the screen)
The measured values and visual impressions were certainly exceptional at the end of 2006. In 2008, the competition has become stronger. The Mitsubishi HC6000 is clearly superior to the Sony, especially in terms of image sharpness and video processing. On the other hand, it delivers a lot less light. However, I now find the prices very convincing: The VW50 can be had for less than €2000! And it‘s well worth it.
